TRACKING LOCAL GOLFERS ON PGA TOUR
THIS WEEK: PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, through today, Torrey Pines North and South Courses, San Diego
IN THE FIELD: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley, Tacoma’s Troy Kelly.
Stanley’s third-round score: 4-under-par 68 on the South Course
KELLY’s third-round score: 6-over 78 on the South Course
POSITION: At 18-under 198, Stanley holds a five-shot lead over John Huh and John Rollins (203). Kelly (2-over 218) missed the final-day cut but did earn a paycheck for finishing in 79th place. Moore missed the cut Friday at 1-under 143.
RECAP: With his great length and poise, Stanley appears to be playing the beastly South Course differently than the field. His lead grew to five shots when he made an 18-foot birdie on the 199-yard, par-3 16th, and had he converted a 51/2-foot birdie putt on the finishing hole, he would have eclipsed Tiger Woods’ 54-hole record in this event (198). … After two pretty good rounds, disaster struck Kelly midway through his round by taking penalty strokes at the 17th (drive too far left) and 18th hole (two approach shots in a greenside pond), and finished that two-hole stretch in 6-over.
STANLEY’S TEE TIME TODAY: 10:30 a.m. on the South Course
NEXT FOR KELLY: He’s an alternate for the Waste Management Phoenix Open starting Thursday at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona
