TEMPE, Ariz. – Life without Trent Lockett has been tough for Arizona State. Finally winning without him on Saturday felt extra satisfying.

Carrick Felix scored 20 points, and the Sun Devils overcame a career-high 34 from Washington State’s Brock Motum to beat the Cougars, 71-67, on Saturday.

Chris Colvin added a career-high 16 points for the Sun Devils (7-14 overall, 3-6 Pacific-12 Conference), who had lost three in a row since Lockett – their top scorer and team leader – was sidelined with a sprained right ankle. Winning without him took a group effort.

“The extra pass, that was one thing coach stressed to us in practice, that was one thing we did in practice,” Colvin said. “So we wanted to carry it on to the game. It paid dividends for us.”

Both teams were short-handed.

The Cougars (11-10, 3-6) were without Faisal Aden, the reigning conference player of the week who was on crutches after injuring his left knee in the team’s loss at Arizona on Thursday night.

The Sun Devils had one of their better shooting nights, making 55 percent to Washington State’s 47 percent.

“It wasn’t our offense. Our offense was fine,” Motum said. “I thought it was just our defense.”

Felix made four of six free throws in the final 17.7 seconds. The final one, with two seconds left, finally sealed the victory after Reggie Moore’s 3-pointer had cut the lead to 70-67 with 3.2 seconds to go.

The Cougars fell to 0-5 on the road in the Pac-12 but are 3-1 at home.

Motum was 13-for-19 shooting, 2-for-4 from 3-point range, and the junior from Brisbane, Australia, made all six of his free throws.

“If I had zero points but the win I would be way happier than this, losing,” Motum said. “I don’t know, it’s just winning is the only thing.”

At UCLA 77, Colorado 60: Lazeric Jones had 17 points and nine assists to help the Bruins (12-9, 5-4) beat the Buffaloes (14-7, 6-3), dropping Colorado out of a first-place.

Travis Wear added 14 points, Tyler Lamb 13, and David Wear 11 for UCLA.

Askia Booker scored 13 points and Andre Roberson had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Colorado.

At Southern Cal 62, Utah 45: Garrett Jackson scored 16 points and the Trojans (6-16, 1-8) led all the way in beating the Utes (5-16, 2-7).

Maurice Jones added 16 points and Greg Allen and freshman Byron Wesley had nine points each for USC.

Dijon Farr led Utah with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Toni Kokenis added 18 points, including two key free throws in overtime, and Nnemkadi Ogwumike had 12 to move past Val Whiting into fourth place on the all-time scoring list for Stanford, which has won 15 straight games overall.

At Oregon State 67, Oregon 60: Ali Gibson had a career-high 23 points to lead the Beavers (13-7, 4-5) over the rival Ducks (11-10, 3-6).

Oregon State scored nine straight points on a trio of 3-pointers in the final 4 minutes to take control in what had been a back-and-forth game.
