  A team of students from Hanford High School has been chosen for the National Science Bowl event in Washington, D.C., beginning today.

  The event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and will pit 44 middle school and 69 high school teams against each other in Jeopardy -style competition with math and science questions, according to a release from the department.

  The Hanford team is one of just five from the state of Washington competing.

  A team from Treasure Valley Math and Science Center took second place in the Lithium-Ion Battery-Powered Model Car Challenge, a featured event at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl.

  The event takes place in Washington D.C. through Monday. The team was competing for cash and prizes for building their cars with everyday household materials.

  The school’s team also has advanced to the “sweet 16” of the National Science Bowl, out of an original field of 69 high school teams from across the country, according to a release. The National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that test's student's knowledge in all areas of science, in a quiz format similar to Jeopardy. The team has already taken a $1,000 prize as one of the top 16 teams.

  Students from around the region will compete Saturday in the Department of Energy's science bowl at Washington State University Tri-Cities in Richland.

  The regional competition of DOE's Pacific Northwest Site Office will have 24 teams from southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon battle for a spot in April's national finals in Washington, D.C.

  Middle and high school students will try to answer questions on biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, astronomy and math.
