BELLINGHAM - The Broadway Park area, a plat that first began developing in the early 1900s and was envisioned as an upscale "streetcar suburb," is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Broadway Park Historic District is roughly bounded by the following streets: Illinois, West North, Summer and Ellis. It's recognizable on maps from the winding pattern of its streets, in contrast to grid layouts around it.
Among the historic homes in the district is the Roeder Home, which was completed in 1910 at a cost of $20,000 and was already listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city used a state grant to hire a consultant, who surveyed and inventoried homes in the area, before applying for historic status.
Historic status doesn't restrict what landowners can do with their homes or land, but it opens the possibility of getting federal grants. It also makes detailed historic information available to them.
