The Chief Leschi Warriors wrestling team may not have the biggest roster in the Class 2B division, but they have some of the more hard-working grapplers in the SeaTac League.
The Warriors, who have 12 on their roster, will send seven to a sub-district tournament on Saturday.
Chief Leschi head coach Bart Brewer has been pleased with his team’s progress since the season began in November.
“We’re young, and we’re continuing to improve every day in the mat room,” he said. “We have a small team. We have the small wrestlers (between 106-145) work in one half of the mat room and the bigs (152-285) in the other half of the room.
It allows us, as coaches, to work with each wrestler individually on their skills.”
Cheyenne Kudrin-Mello, who wrestles in the 119-pound division, is 15-0 overall and has three tournament championships.
“He has not lost a match all year and has only had a few points scored on him,” Brewer said. “He was taken down a few times at the Bash at the Beach tournament at North Beach High School, but that’s about it.”
Kudrin-Mello may have the opportunity to go undefeated. If he does, he’ll reach his goal of capturing the 2B state championship.
Brewer said his top wrestler is excited about the postseason.
“He is getting pretty pumped for these tournaments coming up,” he said. “He just has to take it one tournament at time. I know it is his goal to get first at every single tournament and to win eventually win a state title.”
Brewer also expects 285-pounder Anthony Edge, 138-pounder Issac Bennett and 106-pounder Levi Joseph to be contenders at postseason tournaments.
