Today is Friday, Feb. 3, the 26th day of the 60-day session.

QUOTED

“I don’t see the barrel fee having any momentum at this point.”

– Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, speaking about Gov. Chris Gregoire’s proposed $1.50 oil fee.

TODAY

It’s the cutoff for Senate bills to pass their policy committees. Any proposals not passed by the end of the day won’t see further action this session, with the exception of budget and revenue-related bills.

University of Washington students will ask lawmakers to protect funding for higher education, part of Huskies on the Hill 2012. Organized by the UW student government, they will speak with legislators throughout the day and rally on the Capitol steps at 11 a.m.

NOTEWORTHY

Recommendations of the sunshine panel, which reviews public-disclosure exemptions, passed out of committee. Senate Bill 5049 would implement nine of the panel’s recommendations, including making finalists’ applications for top public positions subject to public disclosure.

A proposal to exempt recordings of closed executive sessions from public disclosure also made the cutoff by passing committee. Senate Bill 6109 was requested by Attorney General Rob McKenna.

BILLS INTRODUCED

House Bill 2765 would set performance standards for educational interpreters to meet on assessments.

Senate Joint Memorial 8018 would ask the president and Congress to approve the Keystone XL pipeline project, which would carry crude oil from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries.
