Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is hosting two volunteer open houses to introduce people to the many year-round volunteer opportunities available at the park.

The first open houses is scheduled from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. The other session will be 1-2 p.m. Feb. 12.

This is a chance to learn about year-round volunteering in the park’s education, maintenance and visitor services departments during the informal question-and-answer session.

The open houses are not designed for volunteers who are specifically interested in helping with storm-related cleanup. The park has been closed since the Jan. 19 ice storm caused extensive damage throughout the park. Metro Parks Tacoma said the park will reopen Feb. 17. State Parks needs volunteer park hosts

OLYMPIA -- The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking enthusiastic and interested volunteers to serve as hosts at state parks throughout Washington.

The Washington State Parks Host Program offers volunteers the chance to stay in park settings while gaining experience in park operations and visitor services. They represent state parks by greeting the public and assisting park staff with tasks.

Hosts receive free camping and hookups in exchange for performing these duties. A typical host assignment is 30 days, but may be extended up to 90 days at the park manager's discretion. Hosts must provide their own RV and camping equipment.
