Organizers of Saturday night's Illuminated Ball say the fundraiser will go on despite the theft of thousands of dollars’ worth of musical instruments, speakers and tools used for set design.
Olympia Police Sgt. Aaron Jelcick said there were no signs of forced entry to the Eagles Ballroom, and detectives think the burglary occurred in the early morning Friday.
“By the amount of equipment taken, there had to be a good-sized vehicle” used to cart the items away, Jelcick said.
Eli Sterling, founder and director of Earthbound Productions, which is putting on the ball, said there initially was concern the event would have to be canceled. But organizers felt it was important to persevere, he said, adding that organizers were working Friday to rent or replace speakers and instruments.
“It’s discouraging, but we’re still going to go forward,” Sterling said.
Jelcick said police don’t have any leads. Sterling said he thinks people setting up for the event had department the ballroom by about 12:45 am. Friday.
