About 26,000 Tacoma Public Utilities customers in East Pierce County lost electricity Friday morning after a large transmission line failed.

An equipment problem sparked the outage, which stretched from Spanaway to the Roy area and darkened schools, stores and intersections.

The outage began about 9:30 a.m. After isolating the problem, utility crews restored power to those affected by 12:30 p.m., the utility reported.

The outage affected several Bethel School District schools, which remained in session during the outage.
