A 52-year-old Olympia bicyclist was in critical condition Saturday at Providence St. Peter Hospital after he was struck by an SUV. According to the Washington State Patrol:

About 11 a.m., Paul F. Stewart was riding south on Meridian Road Northeast at 46th Avenue when he was struck from behind by a 2006 Ford Expedition. The driver was Samalaulu C. Punimata, 22, of Lacey.

Stewart was taken to the hospital and the vehicle was towed to Nisqually Towing; it sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage. Stewart was wearing a helmet.
