Question: What exactly is meant when signs say “Approved traction devices required”? Chains, obviously, but what else? – Peter, Tacoma
Answer: In addition to snow chains, traction devices approved by the Washington State Patrol include studded tires and traction tires.
If you’re not sure whether you have approved traction tires, look for a mountain symbol with a snowflake inside it on the tire sidewall. If you see the letters “M+S” (mud and snow) or “All Season,” that qualifies, too.
Check out WAC 204-24-040 for the nitty gritty details on tread design, but generally treads have to be at least one-eighth of an inch deep in the center of the tire, have an “aggressive tread pattern” and have shoulder lugs that stick out at least one-half inch from the side of the tire.
