Tacoma Public Schools has decided not to seek a state waiver that could have allowed the district to shorten the school year because of last months snowstorm.
The district announced today that most Tacoma students are scheduled to attend school June 20 through 22 to make up for three school days lost to snow. The School Board previously approved those dates as official makeup days as part of calendar revisions made in September following an eight-day teacher strike.
Acting Superintendent Carla Santorno said last month that the district might pursue a waiver for the January snow days. In a news release today, she said she reconsidered after officials looked at all the options.
Our highest priority is giving our students as much instruction as we can, Santorno said.
A few Tacoma schools that use an alternate calendar will finish the school year earlier than June 22.
If students lose any more days to inclement weather, Santorno said she would again consider asking the state for a waiver to prevent the school year from running later.
