A former Maryland governor who is widely credited with coining the term “smart growth” will be a panelist Thursday at a University of Washington Tacoma forum on urban development.

Parris Glendening, now the president of the Smart Growth America’s Leadership Institute, will be one of five panelists at the Urban Studies Forum focused on balancing industrial and post-industrial urban development. The all-day forum begins with a 7:30 a.m. registration in William Philip Hall on the UWT campus.

Other panelists and speakers will include a professor who has studied how cities create economic development opportunities in green sectors, an executive charged with making Milwaukee, Wis., a global hub for water research and development, and the CEO of a New York nonprofit industrial development company.

Speakers and panels will discuss the role of advanced manufacturing in the urban economy, urban land-use policies and politics, work-force education and training, post-industrial innovations and urban sustainability, according to a UWT news release.

Online registration for the free event has closed, but anyone interested in attending can email BrieAnna Jaiteh at bjaiteh@uw.edu.
