Flags at all state agency buildings will be flying at half-staff today in honor of a Marine sergeant from Seattle who was killed recently in Afghanistan.

Sgt. William C. Stacey, 23, died Jan. 31 from injuries he got from an improvised explosive device.

Today is a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and there's no way I was going to miss it. I was helping to chaperone a group of 10 Young Marines from across the nation who participated in a military historical tour in the Pacific from March 9-16.

A trip to Iwo Jima is scheduled once a year through the Virginia-based Military Historical Tours and it is the only U.S. organization with access to the Japanese island. The Young Marines have partnered with the tour company to join the trip every year, but only the best of the best are selected to go.

Tri-Citians gather to honor fallen veterans

A sea of American flags marked where veterans have been laid to rest at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick.

Each flag was buffeted by the wind, just as the large American flag flown at half staff as part of honoring fallen heroes on Memorial Day.

Bob Cooley, post commander for Kennewick VFW Post 5785, told about 400 people gathered Monday morning how one man showed respect for a fallen hero.
