Foss High junior Dezmyn Trent remembers having to watch the final minutes of the fourth quarter and the three following overtimes from the bench in last week’s loss to Class 3A Narrows League foe Capital.
He wasn’t about to let his team lose without him again – especially with a berth in the postseason on the line.
Trent scored a game-high 19 points – including 11 in the decisive third quarter – as the Falcons secured a spot in the West Central District tournament with a 64-45 win over Capital on Wednesday night at Foss High.
“I was real mad,” Trent said about fouling out with three minutes left in the 104-100 loss Jan. 31. “Then we had three overtimes, so I didn’t get to play in any of them. I was thinking, ‘I’m not doing this again.’ ”
With their seasons on the line, both teams came out hungry. After Sean Williams’ 3-pointer gave Foss (14-5, 6-4 Narrows 3A) a 28-18 lead with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left in the first half, Capital went on an 8-0 run to close out the half. Jared Eidenmuller fueled the run, knocking down a 15-foot jumper from the top of the key while being fouled. He hit the free throw with 29 seconds left, and the Cougars’ halftime deficit was 28-26. Eidenmuller, a junior guard, scored 13 points in the first half.
“Our shot selection at the end of the quarter was pretty bad,” Foss coach Mike Cocke’ said. “With three minutes to go, we took some quick shots and allowed them to come down and they executed, scored and made it a game.”
But that didn’t last for Capital.
Foss opened the second half with an 8-3 run, as Dontiea Hankins’ layup with 4:54 remaining put the Falcons up 36-29. Then Trent starting finding his groove, draining 3-pointers in an 11-points third quarter, that helped the Falcons gain control at 49-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
Capital (11-10, 5-5) scored two points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter as Foss pulled ahead.
