Drivers traveling through Federal Way this weekend should expect delays. The state Department of Transportation will close all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 at state Route 18 by 11 p.m. Saturday. They will reopen at 7 a.m. Sunday.
In addition, two northbound I-5 lanes near state Route 18 will be closed overnight. The first lane will close at 8 p.m. Saturday, the second will close at 9 p.m. Both lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. The ramp from westbound state Route 18 to southbound I-5 and the ramp from southbound I-5 to eastbound state Route 18 will be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.
The closures are to allow crews to begin installing large steel girders over I-5 for two new flyover ramps. Cranes will lift the girders into place. Traffic will be detoured onto South 348th Street to southbound Highway 99, then to 54th Avenue East in Fife before getting back on I-5. Police will direct drivers at major intersections.
