A man burned down his mother’s Yelm home early Friday morning after a dispute with her turned violent, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
The 25-year-old man was taken into custody Friday after he set the home in the 14000 block of 130th Lane Southeast in Yelm on fire, Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said. The home was a total loss.
According to Elwin:
Deputies were dispatched to the home about 5:15 a.m. after the woman said she’d had a dispute with her son and she feared for her safety. The woman said she locked herself in a bathroom, broke out a window and escaped after he tried to break down the door.
Deputies established a perimeter and tried to get him to come out. He exited the home after setting a number of fires inside. When he exited, he was aimed an edged gardening tool at deputies. After a brief altercation, the man was taken into custody.
Deputies are investigating; the man is expected to face charges of arson, assault and false imprisonment.
