  Standing on the rooftop of a single-story home, I gaze at my fellow volunteers busily shingling a house for a three-generation family of women. Not only are the new homeowners women, but the workers on the build site are women too! Laughter, camaraderie and a sense of purpose drive us all to do our best. Women, many overcoming their fear of heights to help a local family take one more step out of poverty, are hoisting buckets of nails up the ladder, placing black underlayment and hammering countless shingles into place.

  This scene is just one of the many meaningful experiences I had as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County's first Women Build project in 2011. Our local Habitat affiliate will break ground on its second Women Build project this Sunday, April 22.

  Northwest Nazarene University hosts opera fundraiser

  Northwest Nazarene University’s premier women’s choir “Belle Voce” will host an Italian opera dinner at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, at the College Church of the Nazarene.

  The fundraiser will help the group pay for tours and supplementing students who cannot afford choir performance costumes.

  Music will be performed during dinner by students Alexandra Jarratt of Nampa and Valerie Bower of Rochester, Wash. NNU graduate and former professor Adam Duncan also will be welcomed as a special guest performer.
