  FERNDALE - Some city leaders want to get as much money from developers as is reasonable to pay for road improvements: "Growth must pay for growth," as one City Council member said.

  On the other hand, developers warned city staff that proposed new fees would price some companies, especially the smaller ones, out of Ferndale.

  The council could decide as early as Monday, March 5, to set the impact fee above the $2,300 per evening peak-hour trip adopted last year. The latest proposal to the council from city staff is a two-tiered fee: $3,543 in a 443-acre "planned action area" surrounding the Interstate 5 interchange at Main Street, and $3,358 elsewhere in the city.

  FERNDALE - Yard sale season will get off to a big start Saturday, May 5, with a Garage Sale and Flea Market to benefit the Ferndale Food Bank.

  The sale in the parking lot of the Ferndale Events Center is part of the city's Communitywide Garage Sale, with dozens of locations from one corner of Ferndale to the other.

  Garage Sale and Flea Market organizers hope some of many garage-sale participants in town will bring their business and their fee payments to their donation event. The food drive comes at one of the food bank's times of greatest need.

  Sanitary Service Company is asking for a 1 percent rate increase for customers outside Bellingham and Ferndale to offset higher fees the garbage collection company must pay to two transfer stations in Ferndale.

  If approved by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, the rate hike would go into effect July 1. A rural customer paying $9.42 a month for pickup every other week would pay $9.51 under the new rates, said Amber Jones, chief financial officer for SSC.

  The increase would primarily offset a fee increase from Recomp, one of the two Ferndale transfer stations. Citing inflation, Recomp on July 1 will raise the rate it charges SSC by $2.17 per ton, or 2.3 percent.

  BELLINGHAM - Sale shoppers and deal hunters will want to head to the Bellingham Farmers Market Saturday, May 5, as the market offers its first discount day.

  To celebrate the market's 20th year, each vendor is encouraged to offer 20 percent off of at least one of their products on the first Saturday of each month, May through December.

  More than 30 vendors have signed up to offer one of their items for a discounted price this Saturday, and they'll post signs so shoppers can easily spot the bargains. Market officials hope the sales will encourage people to try new products or splurge on an item that they've been admiring.
