Nine Whatcom County schools are among the 275 statewide that educators have selected for the 2011 Washington Achievement Awards.
The schools will be honored April 25 at Mariner High School in Mukilteo, itself an award winner in the language arts category.
Nooksack Valley School District garnered the most awards among Whatcom County's school districts. Its schools and their awards are:
Nooksack Elementary for overall excellence, science, language arts and closing achievement gaps.
Sumas Elementary for overall excellence and language arts.
Nooksack Valley High School for overall excellence.
Other schools being honored are:
Alderwood Elementary School and Kulshan Middle School for overall excellence - both in Bellingham School District.
Bernice Vossbeck Elementary School for overall excellence, Isom Elementary School for closing achievement gaps and Lynden High School for extended graduation rate - all in Lynden School District.
Blaine High School, in Blaine School District, for overall excellence and extended graduation rate.
This is the third year of the Washington Achievement Awards, which are given by the State Board of Education and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The number of awards this year are nearly 48 percent more than 2010.
Schools were selected in seven categories based on two-year averages.
