TRACKING LOCALS ON THE PGA TOUR
Last week: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am at Monterey Peninsula, Pebble Beach and Spyglass Golf golf courses, Pebble Beach, Calif.
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, Tacoma’s Troy Kelly.
Moore’s fourth-round score: Even-par 72 at Pebble Beach.
Position: Moore (7-under 279) tied for 20th, 10 strokes behind winner Phil Mickelson. Kelly (2-over 216) missed the cut Saturday.
Recap: In the broad picture, considering how a cold and damp Pebble Beach chewed up much of the field Sunday, Moore’s 72 was not a bad score. But considering his start to the round – 4 under through five holes (birdies at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5) – falling back to even par was likely a letdown. He missed a short par-saving putt at No. 6. And then his approach shot to the scenic par-4 eighth landed in high grass dangerously close to the ocean, and his third shot landed in a back greenside bunker, leading to a double bogey. Now, Moore must wait until today to learn if he gets into the 64-player field for the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships (Feb. 22-26) in Arizona – something he badly wants. He was 65th in the world rankings – right on the cut line (Mickelson has announced he will not play in the Match Play) – going into the Pebble Beach tournament.
Next for Moore: Northern Trust Open starting Thursday at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
