A Guide to the Manhattan Project in Washington State has been released by the Atomic Heritage Foundation.

The paperback book, written by Cynthia Kelly of the foundation with an introduction by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Rhodes, is being released in anticipation of Hanford's historic B Reactor becoming part of the national parks system.

The guide covers the beginning of Hanford, when 50,000 people built the nuclear reservation during World War II to produce the plutonium for the world's first atomic explosion and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, helping end the war.

It highlights the challenges of designing first-of-a-kind facilities during wartime at Hanford and also covers Washington's work to turn out planes, ships and trained pilots, including at Pasco's Naval Air Station.

The $13.95 publication is available at atomicheritage. org and online and other book sellers.
