Freddie Solomon, the former Dolphins and 49ers wide receiver, died Monday. He was 59.
Solomon lived in Florida and had battled colon and liver cancer the past year.
He won two Super Bowls with the 49ers in the 1980s during an 11-year NFL career and was voted All-Pro in 1980.
The Dolphins selected Solomon in the second round of the 1975 draft out of the University of Tampa where he played quarterback. He was 12th in the 1974 Heisman Trophy balloting.
He spent his first three seasons with Miami and his final eight in San Francisco, finishing with 371 receptions for 5,846 yards and 48 touchdowns in 371 games.
MOSS WANTS TO PLAY
Six months after retiring, Randy Moss said he wants to play wide receiver again.
Moss announced on a webchat Monday — his 35th birthday — that he’s planning a comeback. Moss posted on his Twitter page: “Now back to biz!! There’s good an bad an u have to b ready for both! its in gods hand now.”
Moss retired in August, compiling 14,858 receiving yards and 153 TDs in 13 seasons. He last played in 2010.
TEBOW TALKS
Tim Tebow spoke to 100 kids at the Challengers Boys & Girls Club in south Los Angeles, some of whom knew who the Broncos quarterback was and others who, somewhat surprisingly, didn’t.
Tebow was promoting books and reading and he told the kids how he has been dyslexic since childhood.
During a question-and-answer session with the kids, one query in particular got the loudest response of all. Tebow was asked if he “has a thing” with pop singer Katy Perry. He laughingly assured the kids he does not.

• Chicago Bears linebacker J.T. Thomas faces a misdemeanor drug possession charge after police in West Virginia said they caught him driving the wrong way down a one-way street and found marijuana in his car.
• A federal judge delayed the drug conspiracy trial for former wide receiver Sam Hurd until August. Trial had been set for April 2.
Hurd, who played with the Bears and Cowboys, and a co-defendant are accused of trying to buy large quantities of pot and cocaine to launch a distribution network while Hurd was with Chicago.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Butch Davis as a special assistant to new coach Greg Schiano. Davis previously was head coach of the Cleveland Browns, University of Miami and North Carolina, and Schiano worked on Davis’ staff with the Hurricanes. … The Green Bay Packers hired John Rushing as offensive assistant/special teams coach. Rushing was a four-year starter at defensive back for Washington State from 1991-94. … The New York Giants signed former Seahawks guard Chris White. … The New York Jets hired Karl Dunbar as defensive line coach and promoted Bob Sutton to assistant head coach/linebackers coach. … The Bengals hired Mark Carrier as defensive backs coach and promoted assistant Paul Guenther to linebackers coach. … The Jacksonville Jaguars hired former Cardinals executive Mark Lamping as team president.
