Peninsula High School students met with U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., as part of the Close Up Foundation Washington High School Program.
The Peninsula High students are there for a week-long civic engagement trip. They include Edward Friedman, Alex Ridder, Josh Youngchild, Nichole Lique, Shelly Elmore, Desiree Johnson, Emilie Laakso, Amanda Williams, Jake Haines, Stephanie Wright, Gina Wasserman, Rhea Canas, Vivian Garcia, Michelle Parker, Tim Mountjoy, and teachers Tim Messersmith and Ken Brown.
Since 1971, Close Up has provided the premier Washington civic education experience to almost 725,000 participants. Close Up programs seek to educate, inspire and empower students by providing them with the skills and experience they need to become active citizens in our democracy.
Each year, Close Up schedules more than 1,000 meetings on Capitol Hill for participants to meet with their members of Congress and staff. The meetings demonstrate the accessibility of democratic government and provide a forum for students to express their views on policy issues.
