The Class 3A state swimming and diving championships are underway today at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

I'm following Peninsula competitors this morning and will turn my attention to Gig Harbor, Puyallup and Rogers (Puyallup) athletes when the 4A portion kicks off about 2:30 this afternoon.

I'll post occasional updates here. For more up-to-date information, follow me on Twitter, @gateway_brian.

Update 1:

Peninsula's 200-yard medley relay team has reached Saturday's consolation finals after its preliminary performance this morning.

Matt Burkey, Ethan Carlson, Alex Chandler and Donavan Cummings combined to finish in 1:44.14. They finished sixth in their heat and 15th overall.

The top eight finishers in each preliminary heat advance to Saturday's championship final, and the second eight will compete in the consolation final.

Burkey swam the opening backstroke leg in 26.06 seconds. Carlson turned in a 27.83 breaststroke leg, and Chandler made the round in the butterfly in 26.01. Cummings' freestyle leg capped it off in 24.24.

The Seahawks' Caleb Riggs finished 19th in the 200 IM in 2:03.76. The sophomore shaved off 0.12 seconds from his seed time.

Burkey will be the first alternate to the consolation final in the 50 free after the junior finished in 22.68. He was fifth in his prelim heat.

Update 2:

Burkey turned in a fantastic performance in the 100 free, where he dropped nearly a half-second off his seed time to finish 11th overall. His time of 49.31 will get him into the B final. If he had duplicated his seed time of 49.76, he would have been the first alternate and likely would have been out of Saturday's race.

Wenman, a sophomore, finished 23rd in the 500 free in 5:16.59, about six seconds slower than his seed time.

Update 3:

Great times for Peninsula breaststrokers Carlson and Riggs. Both of them have qualified for Saturday's championship final in the event.

Riggs, who won the consolation final last year as a freshman, won his prelim heat in 1:01.95. Carlson, a senior, placed second in his heat in 1:00.25.

Carlson's time was the third fastest all all three prelim heats, and Riggs was seventh. Raymond Ha of Liberty (Renton) and Tommy Thach of Kennedy Catholic were the only two swimmers to break the one-minute mark. Ha dropped more than two seconds off his seed time to finish in 57.95, and Thach touched the wall in 59.39.

Carlson's time was 0.64 seconds faster than his seed time. Riggs was 0.13 slower than his personal best.

Meanwhile, Peninsula's 400 free relay team qualified for the consolation final in 3:27.60. Senior Joel Ratcliffe, Wenman, Burkey and Riggs turned in the 14th-fastest prelim time.

4A updates:

The Gig Harbor Tides' Evan Indahl will swim in the 200 IM state championship final on Saturday. He cruised to a win in his preliminary heat Friday afternoon in 1:58.00.

The junior was one of five swimmers to break the two-minute barrier. On Saturday, he'll contend with Logan Rysemus of Stadium, a familiar Narrows League foe who recorded the best time of the day at 1:54.00. The others who were sub-two minutes were Liam Sosinsky of Kamiak (1:57.29) and Austin Melody of Issaquah (1:57.82).

The Tides' Erik Nielsen tied for 12th in the preliminary heats of the 200 free. His 1:48.31 equaled that of Ryan Gansneder of Mount Rainier. Both will compete in the consolation finals.

Another B final contender will be the Tides' 200 medley relay team, which put up the 16th-best time in the prelims. The team of Andrew Van Camp, Matthew Collins, Jeffrey Hale and Daniel Arroyo finished in 1:45.77.
