I'm at Day 2 of the WIAA state swimming and diving championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Lots of fun on Friday during the prelims, but today is serious business.
Top stories I'll be following include Peninsula's top two breaststrokers, Ethan Carlson and Caleb Riggs, both of whom will be in the championship final toward the end of the meet.
In 4A, Gig Harbor's Evan Indahl will be in the A final in two races, and Erik Nielsen will swim in an A final and a B final. The Tides' 200-free and 400-free relay teams also will swim championship heats.
I'll provide updates shortly after they happen on this blog feed. You can catch more up-to-date information by following me on Twitter, @gateway_brian.
3A update 1:
Peninsula's 200-yard medley relay team finished 13th in the state in the first event Saturday morning. Junior Matt Burkey, senior Ethan Carlson, sophomore Caleb Riggs and sophomore Alex Wenman finished the race in 1 minute, 43.49 seconds, a personal best.
They also had a PR during Friday's prelims, when they finished in 1:44.14.
3A update 2:
Peninsula freshman Paul Friedman finished eighth in the diving competition, and Seahawks junior Jaden Stevens wound up 10th.
Friedman, who has a gymnastics background, said he was nervous as he came into the meet but settled down throughout.
“After a while, I just got in a groove, and I kept in it and got dives,” he said.
Friedman’s total of 307.40 points was about 30 shy of his qualifying total. He said there are several dives in his repertoire that could sway him one way or the other.
“I surprised myself a lot,” he said. “I was a little nervous, especially on my inwards, but they were all right.”
On the other hand, Stevens was disappointed with his performance. His 286 points were well shy of his qualifying score of 378.10. In fact, if he had duplicated that performance, he would have placed third.
“I didn’t feel like I did any of my dives as well as I could have,” Stevens said. “Everyone has one of those days when things just don’t go right.”
Stevens said he’ll try to forget about this weekend and calm his nerves when he reaches the state meet next February. Two of the top three placers will graduate, which could open the door for a banner senior year.
“I’m going to really work on my forward approach and learn from my mistakes,” he said.
3A update 3:
Ethan Carlson and Caleb Riggs finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Look for updates on that, as well as a full story, at www.gateline.com/sports.
4A update 1:
Gig Harbor's 200-medley relay team opened up the meet in the consolation finals and finished 13th in 1:44.08. Team members include senior Andrew Van Camp, senior Matthew Collins, senior Jeffrey Hale and junior Daniel Arroyo.
The Tides' Erik Nielsen won the consolation heat of the 200 free in 1:47.12, edging Christian Barrett, the only representative from Rogers (Puyallup), who touched the wall in 1:47.20.
Gig Harbor's Evan Indahl recorded the first of what will be two top-eight medals with a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley. The junior dropped two seconds from his prelim time to finish in 1:56.20, but it wasn't close to champion Logan Rysemus of Stadium, who became an automatic All-American with his time of 1:50.97.
