Question: Where an “Entering School Zone” sign is posted, there’s no “Leaving School Zone” sign posted. How far does one travel through the school zone area to be safely out of the reduced-speed zone? – Bev Boyle, Tacoma

Answer: Generally speaking, speed zones past schools extend 300 feet in either direction from the border of school property, including playgrounds.

If it’s just a crosswalk designated for school kids, the rule is that the speed zone extends 300 feet from either direction from the marked crosswalk.

That’s what the state law (RCW 46.61.440) says, but be aware that other jurisdictions may have additional restrictions depending on the layout of the school, playgrounds and walkways.

The City of Tacoma’s municipal code (11.05.240) says the city manager has the authority to establish school zones, “where appropriate, to facilitate safe walking.”
