Emerald Ridge gymnastics head coach Bobbi Jones beamed after she watched four athletes compete at the Class 4A state championships this past weekend at the Tacoma Exhibition Hall.
Elizabeth Clemens captured third place in the balance beam (9.225 points) and fourth in floor exercise (9.45). In addition, CaroLyne Schmit collected a fourth-place finish in the vault (9.675).
Fellow Emerald Ridge athletes Shannon Cribbin (vault) and Abby Newby (beam) also participated in the state competition.
Jones was impressed with her team’s showing on the grand stage.
“We had a great competition,” she said. “Our girls had a great routine in all of their events, and that is all you can ask for. They did their best and were successful. They did all they could do. You can’t complain about that. They had a great meet.”
The Jaguars earned the South Puget Sound League South Division’s regular-season championship, the first for the program, Jones said.
“We were really excited about that,” she said.
Jones said her team has the talent on its roster to return to the state competition next February.
“We’re bringing back our core group of athletes. Everyone that competed at state will be back next year,” she said. “We will have a lot of experience and really have a good opportunity to make it all the way as a squad.”
Team camaraderie is one of the Jaguars’ team strengths.
“Our entire team supports each other and gets along great,” Jones said. “Across the board, we were so consistent. Having that chemistry goes a long way to helping that happen.”
