Former Mayor Kathy Turner gets it wrong on mayoral selection process
In her January 25 “Letter To The Editor,” Puyallup’s ex-mayor attempted to discredit Mr. Steven Shores comments about our mayoral selection process. She characterized his comments as “inaccurate.”
It is ironic that by her attempt to set the record straight she scuttled her own arguments with anecdotal information riddled with inaccuracies.
She wrote, “Shores stated that the current process of Mayor by seniority was used since Feb 4, 1980.” The text from his Jan. 18 “Letter The Editor” is as follows. “You (The Herald) failed to research section 6 of the council rules of procedure, which has been used since Feb. 4, 1980.” No mention of mayor by seniority.
She then wrote, “The rules were changed in 1996 with council member Martin becoming the first mayor appointed by seniority.” Inaccurate! The seniority provision was added by approval of Resolution 1436 Dec. 1, 1997.
Interestingly, Section 6.1.2 was added by approval of Resolution 1816 Aug. 18, 2003. This provision stipulates that a mayor selectee may decline the position which would then revert to the incumbent mayor. This provision was approved with Mayor Turner presiding. Her council associate, Marc Brouilette, declined the position of Mayor Jan. 5 2004 making Turner the mayor for two consecutive terms.
Ex-mayor Turner wrote “Knutsen requested that she (Turner) pass the gavel to Hansen, who was not the next in line in seniority.” Also inaccurate!
Why the air of contention? A faulty view of history and “self image” come to mind. The phrase “The Truth Hurts’’ seems appropriate.
