ON THE ROAD Razor Clam Festival
When: 7 a.m.-4 p.m. March 24
Where: Ocean Shores Convention Center
What is it: This is the sixth annual event.
Chowder cookoff: Amateur chowder cooks will be judged in two categories this year with first-time entries in one category and returning cooks in the other. Cash prizes will be given for first, second and third place in both categories. There also will be a professional category. There also will be a “Creative Clam Entree” competition. Helping judge the food events will be Kathy Casey, a well-known Seattle chef and owner of Kathy Casey Food Studios.
Other activities: They include awarding the “best decorated clam shovel or gun;” a salute to the businesses of Ocean Shores; the artisan craft marketplace with more than 40 Northwest participants; children’s activities and games; music; information about coastal heritage, conservation and cultural exhibits; beer and wine bars featuring specialty drinks; and food. The festival begins with the firefighters’ pancake breakfast at 7 a.m.
Dig your own clams: A razor clam dig will take place March 24 to coincide with the festival. The best digging will take place an hour or two before low tide at 8:25 a.m. Digging also will be allowed on March 25.
Admission: $3 per person, children 12 and younger will be admitted free.
