Scouting report

The Cougars, who played one of their best games of the season Tuesday at San Francisco, face the Cowboys in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

Capers said “a lot of” WSU players initially “wanted to go home” for spring break after the Cougars lost in the first round of the Pacific-12 Conference tournament.

“When they saw, ‘Well, we’re not going home,’ we might as well go out and make the best of this.” Capers said.

Wyoming struggles to score, but USC transfer Washington can be tough down low, and Martinez and Cruz love to bomb away. Washington has four double-doubles in five games.

The Cowboys rank among the nation’s top defenses, allowing 56.1 points a game.

The Cougars are 10-3 at Beasley this season and 6-0 at Beasley in the postseason. In the past two games, Capers has sank 10 of 12 shots, scored 26 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and handed out 10 assists.

This is the first day of classes after spring break, so the Cougars hope to break even after paying the CBI $50,000 for the home game. The webcast is available at www.wsucougars.com for $9.95.

Next: The winner plays Wednesday in the semifinals.
