Joshua Garcia will be Tacoma Public Schools next deputy superintendent in July, following last week’s approval by the Tacoma School Board.
Garcia will fill the spot left by Carla Santorno, who in January became the school district’s acting superintendent. Garcia comes to Tacoma from the Federal Way School District, where he is an assistant superintendent.
Santorno said Garcia has been involved in initiatives in Federal Way, including enrolling more students in Advanced Placement classes.
As deputy superintendent in Tacoma, Garcia will support the work of the superintendent, manage planning for the district and direct the curriculum and instruction program.
“Both sets of my grandparents immigrated to the United States – from Europe and Latin America,” Garcia said in a news release. “Each one valued education and made sure their young families attended the public school system.”
He said the values of his parents and grandparents continue to serve as his guide.
Garcia holds a doctorate degree in education from Seattle University and was a vice principal at White River High School.
