A PBS television genealogy series will feature a Tacoma-raised rabbi on Sunday.
Angela Warnick Buchdahl, the senior cantor of New York’s Central Synagogue, is the subject of “Finding Your Roots” which will air at 8 p.m.
Each episode of the 10-part series, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., centers on one celebrity pair or trio bound together by an intimate, sometimes hidden link.
The show digs through ancestral history and DNA to uncover the roots of family trees and sometimes make life-altering discoveries.
The episode with Buchdahl also features Christian Evangelical minister Rick Warren and American Islamic scholar Yasir Qadhi.
Buchdahl is the daughter of Fred and Sulja Warnick. Her parents met in Korea. Buchdahl came to Tacoma at age four and was raised in her father’s Jewish faith.
Her mother is Korean Buddhist. Buchdahl attended McCarver Elementary, Jason Lee and Stadium High schools.
Buchdahl’s synagogue is the flagship of the Reform movement with more than 6,500 members. She was the first Asian American to be ordained as a rabbi or cantor in North America.
