Bellarmine's Liufau commits to Colorado
Colorado was comfortable.
A few days after he visited the University of Colorado last week, Bellarmine Prep quarterback Sefo Liufau orally committed to the Buffaloes.
“When my dad and I visited,” Liufau said, “they made us feel comfortable. It was a good fit.”
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior committed to Colorado on Friday.
Liufau, rated by most scouting services as a four-star recruit, said he enjoyed the time he spent with Colorado’s coaches and was impressed by what he perceived as a family atmosphere.
Colorado’s offensive scheme, which is similar to what Bellarmine Prep runs, was also a positive.
“We have different calls,” he said, “but everything else is pretty much the same.”
Liufau is a two-year starter and helped lead the Lions deep into the state playoffs his sophomore and junior seasons.
Also a standout on the basketball court, Liufau does not play a spring sport.
Instead, he said he’s spending his free time in the weight room and throwing to teammates in preparation for next fall.
Liufau is the second Washington quarterback to commit to an out-of-state school this month. Skyline’s Max Browne, a five-star recruit, pledged Southern California..
Though Colorado is the only school that has offered a scholarship to Liufau, it won’t be a surprise if more schools makes offers in the coming months. Liufau said he’ll listen to their pitches, but he doesn’t plan to change his mind.
“I’ll respectfully listen to what they have to say,” Liufau said, “but I’m a Buff.”
REP ASSEMBLY RESULTS
No reclassification and no changes to existing state tournament formats.
The amendments passed by the 2012 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association certainly won’t drastically change the landscape of high school sports.
Voting results were released Monday. Seven amendments passed. Among the notable are the following measures:
• The 10-run rule will apply to regular-season and playoff baseball games.
• A running clock will be implemented in Class 1B football games when the margin is 40 points or greater.
• Coaches may be punished for breaking WIAA rules, rather than a league, district or WIAA imposing penalties on the entire team.
An amendment that would have banned football teams from using school-issued helmets and shoulder pads outside the fall season was defeated, 43-5 with five abstentions.
BEAMER HIRES COACH
Todd Beamer hired Corey Alexander to lead its girls basketball program, Titans athletic director Jerry Peterson said Monday.
Alexander was an assistant coach at Auburn Riverside the past two seasons.
