Portland stuns Sporting KC
An own goal spoiled Sporting Kansas City’s quest for an eighth straight victory.
Chance Myers’ headed the ball into his own goal in the 41st minute against the Timbers for a 1-0 upset on Saturday night at Jeld-Wen Field in Portland.
Sporting KC (7-1-0) opened the season with seven straight wins and was Major League Soccer’s only undefeated team heading into the match against the struggling Timbers (2-4-1). The record for most victories to start a season is 12, set by the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1996, the league’s inaugural year.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Portland, who hadn’t won since a 3-1 victory at home over Philadelphia in the season opener.
Galaxy 2, at Rapids 1: Landon Donovan scored in the 39th minute, and goalkeeper Josh Saunders stopped a penalty kick in added time as Los Angeles beat Colorado to earn its first road win.
Saunders made a diving save for Los Angeles (3-3-0) on a penalty kick by Omar Cummings to preserve the win.
Cummings scored in the 63rd minute for Colorado (3-4-0) which suffered its third defeat in a row.
Dynamo 2, at Crew 2: Brian Ching scored the tying goal in the 81st minute to give Houston (2-1-2) a draw with Columbus (2-3-1).
Ching took a pass from the right side by Will Bruin, who had the Dynamo’s first goal in the 59th minute, and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.
Eddie Gaven scored twice for the Crew.
Fire 3, at Toronto FC 2: Patrick Nyarko scored in the 58th minute, and Chicago (2-1-2) kept Toronto winless.
Toronto (0-6-0), which got two goals from Reggie Lambe, is tied for the second-worst start in MLS history. Kansas City opened the 1999 season 0-7-0.
At Earthquakes 3, Real Salt Lake 1: Simon Dawkins and Chris Wondolowski scored in second-half injury time as San Jose took advantage of two red cards to beat Real Salt Lake.
Khari Stephenson scored in first-half injury time, and Kyle Beckerman hit the equalizer in the 53rd minute.
Union 1, at Chivas USA 0: Freddy Adu scored his first goal of the season as Philadelphia handed Chivas its fourth home loss in a row.
The Union struck in the 40th minute as Michael Farfan fired a cross that deflected off of defender Rauwshan McKenzie and onto the back heel of Adu for the goal.
At Whitecaps 1, FC Dallas 0: Camilo Sanvezzo scored in the 11th minute, and Vancouver (3-2-2) beat Dallas (3-3-1).
Sanvezzo broke the scoreless tie with a solid solo effort. He began at the right sideline, cut to the middle of the field and fired a left-footed strike to the left of goalkeeper Chris Seitz. That gives the Brazilian two goals on the season.
