Foss runner sets season's fastest 200 during Narrows League 3A championships

Like he’s done all season, Marcus Chambers coasted to an easy victory in the 400-meter dash at the Narrows League 3A track and field championships – winning the event by a comfortable 2 seconds.
Things weren’t as simple for the Foss junior in the 200, however.
Not when the field featured Lincoln’s Quadelle Satterwhite, the defending state champion who had been hampered by a leg injury.
Fireworks were expected when the two knocked heads on the track. They didn’t disappoint.
Chambers ran the state’s fastest 200 time regardless of classification this season, stopping the clock in 21.33 seconds at the league championship meet Friday at Yelm High School.
Satterwhite, a senior, wasn’t far behind, pressuring Chambers the entire race before crossing the finish line in a speedy 21.61.
“It’s great to have Quadelle back out on the track,” said Chambers, who won the 400 with a time of 49.20. “He’s my boy. I don’t put up this time if he’s not out there today. We just push each other.”
The winning time bettered the previous high mark of 21.44 set by Wes Bailey of Wenatchee and equaled by Tatum Taylor of O’Dea.
Satterwhite’s time is the fourth fastest in 3A and the fifth best overall this year.
“I had no idea we ran that fast,” Chambers said. “We were talking right after the race and we both felt the start was a little slow. It wasn’t until after the race that we realized how fast we were going.”
The rematch is now set for the 3A West Central/Southwest bi-district meet, which begins Friday at Mount Tahoma High School.
“The 200 the next two weeks is going to be the race to watch, first at districts and then at state,” Satterwhite said. “Plus the next two meets are at Mount Tahoma. That’s our home. We’ve been running there since middle school. It should be a lot of fun.”
Satterwhite didn’t go home empty handed, winning the 100 in a personal-best time of 10.78.
“It’s still a little sore,” Satterwhite said of his injured quadriceps, “but it felt good being out there on the track today. Hopefully it just keeps improving the next two weeks.”
Timberline (128 points) claimed the boys team title, while Wilson (193) comfortably captured the girls crown.
The Blazers won five events on the boys side, including the 4x400 relay.
Rashon Smith, who holds the 3A’s top 300 hurdle time this season (38.36), won both hurdle events, winning the 110 in 14.85 and the 300 in 38.96, while fellow Timberline senior Sawyer Hardebeck posted a winning time of 2:05.26 in the 800.
Timberline also got a win from sophomore Asan Neil in the triple jump (41 feet, 8 inches).
Capital’s Alex Temple won the 1,600 (4:20.70) and the 3,200 (9:57.61) to join Smith and Chambers as dual event winners.
The Wilson girls got victories from Allyssa Marzano (triple jump and long jump), Bethany Montgomery (high jump) and Terina Nelson (javelin).
Capital’s Nicole Hartman won the 800 (2:28.70) and 3,200 (12:09.36), while Yelm’s Joanna Mazer posted wins in the 100 hurdles (16.65) and 330 hurdles (47.55)
