The weekend nature programs at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge continue with a birding program Saturday and one on the area’s history Sunday.
“Birds of Nisqually” will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday. Longtime birder Phil Kelley, who knows the refuge backward and forward, will lead this guided walk. Meet at the landing overlooking the pond at the visitor center.
On Sunday, from 1-2:30 p.m., Lynn Corliss will lead a walk that focuses on the history of the area. Participants can learn about the events surrounding the signing of the Medicine Creek Treaty, explore how the Nisqually people came to the delta and how their lives changed with the settlement of Europeans. Meet at the visitor center.
The walking trails are level and smooth with no elevation gain, but participants should wear comfortable shoes. Feel free to bring binoculars or check them out from the visitor center.
The programs are free, but the $3 refuge entrance fee still applies. For information, call the refuge at 360-753-9467.
