Sounds to savor: Band, choir, jazz

Tacoma’s education institutions offer plenty of free events to the public, and TCC is a main contributor, with three music concerts over three weeks as part of the end-of-year events. Support students and hear free music from symphonic band to choral to jazz. It’s especially welcome now that most classical groups have closed their seasons.

The first concert is by the symphonic band next Thursday, and the program includes a concerto by British composer Edward Gregson in the style of Stravinsky and Poulenc, with Amy Grinsteiner as piano soloist. There also is a musical tribute to the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado, and other contemporary works in a variety of styles.

Here are the details:

TCC Symphonic Band, 7:30 p.m. May 31.

TCC Choir Concert, 7:30 p.m. June 8.

TCC Jazz Band, 7:30 p.m. June 13.

All concerts are in the TCC Auditorium in Building 2, 6500 S. 12th St., Tacoma. 253-460-4374 or tacomacc.edu.
