A 49-year-old Olympia-area woman was critically injured Friday when a .380 semi-automatic handgun that her son was handling accidentally discharged.

The bullet hit the woman in the head. She was rushed to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia and made it through surgery Friday morning, Thurston County sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said.

Her son, 20, was interviewed at the scene and has not been arrested.

“There is no reason to believe there was any criminal intent,” Elwin said. “He was appropriately distraught.”
