Visa says the number of transactions made in the U.S. using its cards fell 3 percent in April, compared with a year earlier.

And during the first four weeks of May, the payments network company said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday, the amount Americans rang up on their charge cards was the same as a year earlier.

The company’s debit transactions were hit especially hard. They fell 12 percent in April, while credit transactions rose 8 percent. In May, debit payments fell 8 percent, while credit transactions grew 10 percent.
