Two road-construction projects near Tacoma’s new LeMay-America’s Car Museum likely will complicate matters for people heading to the museum’s grand-opening festivities Saturday.
Exit 133 from north-bound Interstate 5, the normal route to the city center from the south, is closed for renovation, and some surface streets immediately north of the museum are closed for construction of a Sounder commuter rail line.
Museum officials say they’re expecting more than 10,000 people at the grand opening, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
To get around the freeway construction, visitors from the south are advised to take Exit 132, the previous northbound exit.
Stay in the right lane of the exit, and instead of going onto state Route 16, drive straight and join the collector/distributor that leads to Interstate 705 and the city center. Make a right turn on 26th Street and follow signs for parking.
Southbound visitors should take I-5 south to Exit 133 for I-705 and the city center. Turn right onto 26th Street and follow signs for parking from there.
Parking near the new museum also will be challenging.
Museum officials are encouraging visitors to avoid the area closest to the Tacoma Dome and to park elsewhere in downtown Tacoma and ride the Link light rail from there.
