Romney clinches majority of state delegates; Paul lands at least 5
Last updated: June 1st, 2012 08:04 PM (PDT)

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Friday clinched a majority of Washington’s delegates to the Republican National Convention.

But Ron Paul supporters did well enough to send at least five of their own to Tampa, Fla., in the voting Friday in Tacoma.

“It went exceedingly smoothly,” state GOP Chairman Kirby Wilbur said. “There’s no blood on the floor. I’m very pleased.”

Ten of the state’s 43 delegates remain to be awarded on a statewide basis on the state convention’s final day today, but Romney is likely to win those and add to his total of 24 delegates gained at the congressional district level. Wilbur and two other party leaders likely to support Romney make up the rest.

Voters picked one delegate for Rick Santorum, who dropped out of the presidential race to support Romney, as part of a slate pushed by Paul supporters. The libertarian Paul performed well in his strongholds of Seattle and Southwest Washington.
