Beacon shines light on early 1900s life

Puget Sound’s history is intrinsically tied with the water, so what better place to discover it than in a lighthouse? The Browns Point Lighthouse is not only free to visit, but it offers exhibits that explore local history.
Learn about Jerry Meeker, a Puyallup tribal member instrumental in the history of Browns Point and Dash Point. You can check out a replica of an early 20th-century kitchen, sewing room and schoolroom, and see a maritime display with a replica of a Coast Guard surfboat in the original boathouse. There also are tours of the restored 1903 cottage that housed the lighthouse keeper, and kids can ring the historic fog bell.
Visiting hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 24. The Browns Point Lighthouse Park is at 201 Tulalip St. NE, Tacoma. For more details, call 253-927-2536 or go to
