More bags reaching destinations on time

More flights are getting to their destinations on time and with fewer mishandled bags.

The U.S. Transportation Department said Thursday that 86.3 percent of flights on the nation’s biggest airlines arrived on time in April, up several points from the previous month and April 2011. Perennial winner Hawaiian Airlines had the best on-time record, followed by AirTran Airways.

American Airlines had the worst record, and United was only slightly better.

The government said the rate of mishandled bags fell to fewer than three for every 1,000 passengers, the lowest rate since the airlines started reporting the statistic in 1987.
