Broadway Center announces 2012-13 season

David Sedaris, TEDx, Wayne Brady, Roberta Flack, August Wilson plays, Alfred Hitchcock films and “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” are just some of the 40 shows in the 2012-13 season at Tacoma’s Broadway Center for the Performing Arts announced this week.

Member tickets and multi-show packages are on sale; single tickets go on sale July 16.

The new season begins July 19 with a staged reading of Lanford Wilson’s “Fifth of July” followed on July 29 with “Rock ’N’ Blues Fest,” which features a medley of legendary rockers including the Edgar Winter Band, Johnny Winter Band and Rick Derringer.

The new season also sees the return of last year’s Fall Free for All, an all ages-all free-event weekend.

Here’s the season:

July 19 and 20: A Staged reading of Lanford Wilson’s “Fifth of July” – part of Tacoma Pride ($14)

July 27: “Cathedrals Tacoma” featuring David Bazan, Kevin Sur, Pretty Broken Things and Passenger String Quartet. Part of a new series at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. ($16)

July 29: “Rock ’N’ Blues Fest” featuring Edgar Winter Band, Johnny Winter Band, Savoy Brown’s Kim Simmonds, and Rick Derringer ($59-$115)

Sept. 22 and 23: Fall Free for All

Sept. 30: Film Focus: Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.” Part of a classic film series. ($42 for three films.)

Oct. 11: Comedian Wayne Brady ($38-$82)

Oct. 13: Fireworks Ensemble, a fresh perspective on chamber music ($29-$49)

Oct. 25: Dala with pop singer/songwriters Sheila Carbine and Amanda Walther ($36)

Oct. 26 and 27: “A Chorus Line,” the Broadway musical ($49-$84)

Oct. 28: The Capitol Steps political satirists ($35-$68)

Oct. 28: Film Focus: Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” Part of a classic film series. ($42 for three films.)

Nov. 2: Oregon Shakespeare Festival ($42)

Nov. 9: “Video Games Live” – music from popular video games performed by the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra ($39-$94)

Nov. 11: Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitln ($39-$125)

Nov. 16: “Cathedrals Tacoma” series at Immanuel Presbyterian Church

Nov. 24: “The Sound of Music” Sing Along and 67th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting (film: $24; tree lighting: free)

Nov. 30: Christine Lavin and Uncle Bonsai: Just One Angel – “alternative” holiday concert ($42)

Dec. 1: “Rose Ensemble: And Glory Shone All Around: An Early American Christmas” – vocal and ensemble music ($39-$59)

Dec. 7: BARE Tacoma – Holiday

Dec. 13: Seattle Men’s Chorus: “Baby It’s Cold Outside” ($42 and $58)

Jan. 11: “Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway Song & Dance” – Berg joined by Broadway singers, dancers and musicians ($29-$64)

Jan. 11-26: “A Pale and Lovely Place” – a darkly comic musical ($24)

Jan. 13: August Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle: King Hedley II” – staged reading ($28 – includes two August Wilson shows)

April 7: Film Focus: Judy Garland – “A Star is Born.” Part of a film series. ($44 – includes three films in series)

April 26: Simon Shaheen – traditional Arabic sounds to jazz and Western classical styles ($29 and $49)

April 27: An Evening with David Sedaris – author and humorist ($34-$79)

April 27: Christopher O’Riley and Matt Haimovitz: “Shuffle.Play.Listen.”– piano and cello ($32-$54)

May 3: TEDx Tacoma (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a multi-disciplinary conference. ($79)

May 5: Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom – Peter Gros shares his animal world, travel experiences and timeless tales. ($24 and $34)

May 30 – June 8: “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” – audience participates in this wedding/feast/show ($66 and $84)
