ON THE ROAD: Skandia Midsommarfest
What: The event, presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice. The event features the raising of the garlanded pole, hundreds of costumed musicians and dancers, live music and an avenue of traditional craft demonstrations by skilled craftsmen. The first festival was in 1959.
When: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. June 24
Where: St. Edward State Park, 14445 Juanita Drive N.E., Kenmore
Event highlights: The schedule includes the grand parade and raising of a garlanded 45-foot midsommar pole and a serpentine dance around the pole, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Allspel time will be at 3:20 p.m., immediately following the ceremonies at the pole.
A special focus of the festival is the Hemsljdsmarknad – an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected artisans demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies also will be offered. Visitors also can make their own flower crowns.
Guest musicians include Anders and Maria Larsson from Sweden and the Merituuli Youth Choir from Finland.
Cost: Free. A Discover Pass is not needed to enter the park for the festival.
