Steven Powell's lawyers file appeal notice
Lawyers for convicted voyeur Steven Powell have filed a notice of appeal.
Powell, father-in-law of former Puyallup resident Susan Powell, who went missing from her Utah home in December 2009, was sentenced Friday to 2½ years in prison for recording images of two neighbor girls in their bathroom.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Steven Powell’s defense team filed the appeal Monday in Pierce County Superior Court.
Eventual grounds for appeal will be decided by an appellate lawyer. However, lawyer Mark Quigley said he thinks the strongest argument concerns the legality of the search of Powell’s home. He also says the sentence was exceptional.
Steven Powell’s son Josh Powell was the prime suspect in Susan Powell’s disappearance. Josh Powell killed himself and his two young sons at a Graham-area home in February.
Steven Powell was arrested after investigators searching his home for evidence in Susan Powell’s disappearance came across computer disks with what they described as thousands of images of women and girls who seemed unaware they were being photographed.
