Puyallup council votes to sell city building

The City of Puyallup plans to sell a downtown building that today is home to a pair of local nonprofits.
The City Council voted 6-1 this week to declare the Community Resource Center on North Meridian as surplus and authorize the city manager to sell it.
The Daffodil Festival and the Puyallup Main Street Association both are set up in the two-story building.
The city bought the building about 13 years ago; for a while it was used to hold City Council meetings. It hasn’t been needed for that purpose since the new City Hall opened in 2008.
“We’re not going to be moving back there. We’re not going to be using it for city functions,” Councilman John Hopkins said at Tuesday’s meeting.
He added that he hopes the Daffodil and Main Street groups move into the five-story City Hall, which has extra space.
Councilman John Palmer had reservations about the sale. He said he’s generally in favor of selling excess property.
“But I just don’t know if this is the right time for the (resource center). Whatever happened to buying low and selling high? It seems like we’re doing the opposite in this case,” he said. “I think we hold on this one.”
