Metro Parks is planning a big opening bash for Tacoma’s new pool on Saturday.
The Kandle Pool, at 5302 N. 26th St., is Pierce County’s first wave pool. It features a zero-depth, gradual entry to provide easy access for children and people with disabilities. The complex located in Kandle Park also includes a “tot pool” and a spray ground.
For opening day, there will be free admission all day, a steel drum band and coupons to the “Shark Shack” concession booth for the first 250 people. The grand opening kicks off at 11:30 a.m.
“It’s really a thank you to Tacoma,” Nancy Johnson, Metro Parks spokeswoman said of the grand opening.
The pool was paid for in part through a 2005 bond issue approved by Tacoma voters.
Open swim at Kandle Pool runs from 12-5 p.m. If more than 500 people show up, parks officials will split the swim time into two sessions to ensure everyone gets a chance to swim, Johnson said.
