David Sundheim knows the timing wasn’t optimal, but resigning as Beamer High’s football coach was something he had to do.

“There was a family issue that came up and I was able to come through for my family,” he said. “This has nothing to do with or against Beamer.”

Sundheim, who submitted his resignation Thursday, will join his father Pete as an assistant coach at Pinecrest High in Southern Pines, N.C.

Sundheim, who is from Virginia, completed three seasons at Beamer, compiling a record of 10-20.

Sundheim’s resignation means the Titans must begin searching for a new coach less than two months before the season begins.

Beamer athletic director Jerry Peterson said he’s already begun the process.

“We’re looking for new leadership,” he said. “We’re looking at all our options.”

Peterson met with players Friday afternoon to address any questions and concerns.

A year after reaching the postseason for the first time in school history in 2010, Beamer finished the 2011 season with a 2-8 record.

Nevertheless, Sundheim said he believes the Titans have a bright future.

“If they stick together, they are going to be really good,” he said. “The freshman class this year was one of the best I’ve seen.”
